With the Gold Country Fair running September 10-13 and the Gold Country Pro Rodeo at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn, event season is basically here. If you’re planning to back into a spot and make a full afternoon of it, your Silverado does more of the work than you might expect.

What Do the Silverado 1500’s Specs Actually Mean for a Tailgate?

The spec sheet reads like abstraction until you translate it into what happens in a parking lot on Fairgate Road, where six tailgate positions and twelve tie-downs and a bed wide enough for a folding table turn into a setup that actually works. The numbers alone won’t tell you which position to reach for, though.

Chevrolet lists the Durabed’s 12 tie-downs at 500 lbs per corner. That rating matters because a loaded cooler, a wagon of kids’ gear, and a portable grill will all want to slide the moment you hit that last speed bump on the way in. They won’t.

Position 1 (Primary Gate). Drop it the normal way via the key fob from the cab or the tailgate button. You’ve got the full 6.5-foot or 6.6-foot surface to work with. Lay out your setup, anchor your cooler with two of the tie-downs, and you’re done. Fast.

Position 2 (Full-Width Step). The inner gate stays up and works as a step. When you’re carrying a Dutch oven with both hands full and no running board handy, this is the position that earns its keep. Step up, set it in, step back down. The Gold Country Fairgrounds parking lot in September runs close to 100 degrees by mid-afternoon (Auburn summers regularly hit the 90s to low 100s), and you don’t want to be hoisting heavy gear at arm’s length over the side.

Position 3 (Inner Gate Work Surface). The inner gate folds down while the primary gate stays down, so that inner panel becomes a standing-height work surface right at the back of the truck. Food prep actually happens here. Cutting board, condiments, a plate of buns. We’ve watched customers try it once on the lot and start rethinking their whole event setup on the spot.

Position 4 (Easy Access). The inner gate drops toward you so you can reach deeper into the bed without climbing in. Grab the bag of ice you shoved all the way forward. Retrieve the sunscreen you buried under the chairs. At 79.4 inches of bed floor in a standard-bed Crew Cab, “deep” is relative, and this position earns its keep.

Position 5 (Primary Gate Load Stop). With the tailgate down and the inner gate raised upright as a stop, you can keep longer cargo from sliding out on the way to the fairgrounds. Think tent poles, folding table legs, anything that hangs over the tailgate and needs a physical barrier.

Position 6 (Inner Gate Load Stop). The inner gate folds while the upper portion stays angled up as a second-tier stop. Think of it as the hauling position rather than the party one. Either way, it’s how you get your whole setup there without anything shifting on I-80.

One Honest Tradeoff You Need to Know Before You Buy

The one catch worth knowing before you sign anything is the body style, because Chevrolet dropped the Multi-Flex Tailgate from every Double Cab configuration for the 2026 model year, leaving the Double Cab with a standard tailgate and reserving the six-position versatility for the other cabs. If you’re shopping a Double Cab, you’ll get the standard tailgate. Good, solid, functional. But you won’t get the six-position versatility above.

If event season and tailgating are part of why you’re buying a truck, the Crew Cab is the configuration that gets you the Multi-Flex, and that’s a real tradeoff to weigh. The Crew Cab adds rear-seat room but a shorter bed (69.9 inches in the short-bed version versus 79.4 for the standard bed on a Double Cab). For most Auburn and Placer County families heading to a parking lot with four people and a cooler, the Crew Cab short bed is still plenty of space. The standard bed Crew Cab gives you the most of both worlds.

Its Durabed carries whatever the weekend calls for (river gear for the Auburn State Recreation Area, camping equipment for a Tahoe run, or a folding table and four chairs for the Gold Country Fair). And the 120V outlet in the bed means you’re not hunting for a generator or babysitting battery packs.

The honest downside is simple. If the lot is packed and space is tight, a Crew Cab standard-bed Silverado is a long vehicle. Parallel parking in Old Town Auburn is not its strength. Know that going in. For a fairgrounds lot with pull-through rows, it’s a non-issue. For tight urban parking around Auburn’s historic district, it takes some patience.
