CA-49 Fall Drive: Auburn to Grass Valley in a Chevy Equinox
Take CA-49 north out of Auburn, give it about three hours on the road and on foot, and you’ll roll into Grass Valley having caught some of the best September color the Sierra Nevada foothills put out. Here’s what makes this loop worth doing in September. The brutal foothill heat has finally let up, the oak canopy is tipping toward gold, and the two-lane curves between Auburn and Grass Valley are open enough to actually enjoy. The 2026 Chevy Equinox is what we keep steering folks toward for this exact run, less for flash than for fit. It’s right-sized for CA-49’s winding sections, comfortable enough for a half-day out, and loaded with enough tech that you’re not fumbling with your phone through the canyon. We’ll get into exactly why further down the page. The full Auburn-to-Grass Valley stretch on CA-49 covers roughly 20 miles and runs about 30 to 35 minutes of driving with no stops, but nobody does this drive without stopping. Build in two real stops and a short walk, and you’re looking at a comfortable three-hour morning or afternoon. Start in Old Town Auburn, right in our backyard before the day warms up, because even in September the foothill afternoons can push into the low 80s, and the historic district walks best in the cooler morning hours. The narrow streets and mixed-era Gold Rush architecture give you real context for everything you’ll see once you reach Grass Valley. Twenty minutes on foot does it. Get on CA-49 by 9:30 at the latest. The canyon sections above the Auburn State Recreation Area catch the best light mid-morning, and the No Hands Bridge pullout fills fast on weekends. Beat both by leaving early. CA-49 climbs steadily from Auburn into pine-oak woodland as it threads above the North Fork American River corridor, and it’s a pretty drive, but the canyon section is narrow, with limited shoulders and genuine curves. On this stretch, you want your eyes on the road, not on a phone sitting in a cupholder. So the Equinox’s standard Google Built-In with Google Maps on the 11.3-inch infotainment screen earns its keep here. Set your route before you leave Old Town, and the navigation runs quietly while you drive. No reaching, no tapping. The No Hands Bridge stop is worth 20 to 30 minutes even if hiking isn’t your thing. Built in 1912, the Mountain Quarries Railroad span is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, above the North Fork American River inside the Auburn State Recreation Area. The trailhead pullout on CA-49 is small, so weekday mornings in September are your best shot at a space. Empire Mine is the payoff, and it deserves at least 90 minutes if you want to see it right. Rush through and you’ll wish you hadn’t. The park holds 856 acres of forested backcountry with 14 miles of trails, plus some of the best-preserved hard-rock mine infrastructure in California. Some of the numbers are staggering. The mine operated for more than 100 years and, according to California State Parks, extracted 5.8 million ounces of gold before closing in 1956. Beneath the property run 367 miles of abandoned and flooded mine shafts. A scale model in the visitor center makes the underground scope easy to grasp. The restored Bourn Cottage gardens are genuinely beautiful in early fall when the ornamental plantings are still in shape. Trails within the park are free to hike, and the historic grounds carry a small day-use fee for adults and children six and older; children under five get in free. Hours in early September run 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, so arrive at 10 if you’d rather beat the mid-morning crowd. Schedule a Test Drive Before You Go The 2026 Equinox works for this drive because it’s comfortable, efficient, and right-sized for CA-49’s tight sections, even though it gives you nothing in the way of cornering thrill and never pretends to. It’s not the sportiest thing on these curves. The 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder makes 175 horsepower, and the front-wheel-drive model pairs it with a CVT. If you want a canyon-carving feel, this isn’t your vehicle. So what does it do well here? Plenty of the stuff that actually matters. The EPA rates the FWD Equinox at 26 city / 29 highway, and a round trip from Auburn to Grass Valley barely touches the tank. Cargo space behind the rear seat measures 29.8 cubic feet with everyone seated, expanding to 63.5 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. That’s a stroller, a daypack, and a cooler without rearranging anything. Ground clearance across the lineup sits between 8.05 and 8.2 inches depending on trim, which handles the gravel pullouts along CA-49 without drama. The AWD version swaps the CVT for an 8-speed automatic and adds real traction value in late October or November, when morning frost coats the canyon sections. It holds up in every season, not just clear September days. The AWD Equinox is the more versatile choice for anyone who uses CA-49 year-round. The suspension tuning is genuinely comfortable (soft and settled in a way that keeps rear-seat passengers more relaxed on the winding stretches than the stiffer crossovers in this segment). On a drive where the road itself is the experience, that’s something everyone in the car feels. If your crew runs larger than five or you’ve got serious gear to haul, the Chevy Traverse is worth a look before a day trip like this. For two adults or a family of four keeping it light, the Equinox is the right size for the drive and for the tight parking in Old Town Auburn and at the Empire Mine lot.
